Heavy Equipment Operations

Instructor: Jeff Holland

The Golden Isles College and Career Academy (GICCA) Heavy Equipment Operations Pathway is a specialized training track within the Construction Cluster designed to prepare students for high-demand, well-paying careers in civil infrastructure and site development.

Program Overview

The curriculum blends cutting-edge technology with immersive site-work simulations to train students on the critical mechanics of operating earth-moving machinery.

  • Advanced Motion Simulators: Students complete extensive virtual practice utilizing state-of-the-art Caterpillar Motion Platform Simulators that mirror the exact controls, vibrations, and sounds of hydraulic excavators, skid-steers, and bulldozers.
  • Site Preparation Mechanics: Coursework focuses on the core principles of excavation, grading, cutting drainage ditches, digging utility trenches, and handling civil construction materials.
  • Safety & Maintenance Protocols: Instruction heavily emphasizes pre- and post-trip machinery inspections, identifying job-site hazards, fluid level checks, and strict adherence to workplace compliance laws.
  • Industry Capstone Projects: Through an exclusive partnership with local civil contractor Seaboard Construction, students participate in real-world capstones where they operate live machinery under the mentorship of seasoned professionals.
  • Workforce Pipeline: Graduating students can leverage local Work-Based Learning internships to directly sign letters of intent with regional employers like Reeves Construction and CW Matthews on National Signing Day.
